5 GRADE
OLYMPIAD
alena Park ISD held its Fifth Grade Olympiad on Friday, May 18. Fifth grade students from each
of the 15 elementary campuses gather annually at the GPISD’s Athletic Stadium and Complex
in May to compete for the coveted titles in numerous field events such as hula hoop, jump rope,
Gsoftball throw, relays and many more events.
One of the most prestigious titles to win each year is the tug-of-war competition. It was a grueling battle
as students tugged with all their might, pulling one another back and forth until the victors reigned. This
year’s tug-o-war winners were the Green Valley Girls’ Star Team, Cloverleaf Elementary Boys’ Star Team,
Normandy Crossing Elementary Girls’ Stripes Team and Woodland Acres Elementary Boys’ Stripes Team!
Congratulations to everyone who participated!
The Fifth Grade Olympiad culminates with the presentation of the Tom McCollough award, which is
given to students who exemplify outstanding achievement in physical education. The award is in honor
of the first athletic director for Galena Park ISD, Tom McCollough. Representing the Stripes Team, Keysi
Martinez from Tice Elementary and Marcus Walker from Purple Sage Elementary; and
representing the Stars Team, Madily Gold from North Shore Elementary and Isaac
Soliz from Jacinto City Elementary received the award.
