alena Park High School culinary students
participated in the 2018 GPISD Recipe
Throwdown competition presented by the
GStudent Nutrition Department. The winning
recipe will be featured next school year in all
secondary campuses lunch menus.
The inspiration for the Recipe Throwdown was
initiated by students who desired a healthy,
unbreaded chicken entrée. The Galena Park
ISD Student Nutrition Department ran with the
suggestion and started a contest to determine the
best recipe.
Seventeen students submitted recipes with grilled chicken
as the main entrée and one grain component to Ms. Evelyn
Parra, GPISD Dietician and Menu Planner. The recipes varied
from chicken sandwiches to teriyaki chicken to rice bowls.
Six finalists were selected to prepare their recipes in front
of judges, administrators and other culinary students. The
students had 45 minutes to cook their recipes for the judges,
who were from Tyson, Waypoint and San Jacinto College-
North. Sabrina Quintanilla, Galena Park High Senior, was
named the Recipe Throwdown champion with her Lemon
Chicken Teriyaki Rice Bowl.
The Chicken Teriyaki Bowl features whole grain
rice, broccoli, low-sodium soy sauce and
lemon juice.
Congratulations, Sabrina!
