SCIENCE SURVIVOR CHALLENGE

O n Friday, January 19, GPISD students participated in the Elementary Science Survivor Series

(S3) to showcase skills in problem solving, critical thinking, and STEM (Science, Technology,
Engineering and Math.)

All 15 GPISD elementary schools sent a team of six to represent their campus in three challenges -
academic, building, and creativity. The teams and their sponsors worked hard in preparation for this
event; however, they did not know what the challenges would entail until the day of the competition.

For the academic portion, teams were asked to showcase their science content knowledge. In a game
called Picture It, a team member was selected to sketch science terms while their teammates guessed as
many as they could in five minutes.

To showcase their building and writing skills, one student wrote a detailed description of the pre-built
creation for their teammate, who then used a pre-set tub of materials and their partner’s written notes to
replicate the creation as closely as possible.

In the creativity event, the students were provided with an assortment of materials and a challenge
to complete. The students worked collaboratively utilizing the materials provided to build a zip line to
carry a ping-pong ball from point A to point B in 4 seconds or less. Each year, the creativity challenge is
unveiled to the students on the day of the event.
