       Soaring to Success





              ongratulations to Eduardo Hernandez, Galena Park High School senior, for winning the QuestBridge
              Scholarship. The scholarship, worth over $200,000, is given to the nation’s brightest students who
     Chave the desire to continue their education
      and career opportunities. Students must be in the
      Top 5-10 percent of their graduating class and
      score above 1310 on their SAT and 28 on the ACT.


      “I would like to thank QuestBridge for bringing such
      a great opportunity for low income students,” said
      Hernandez. “I would also like to encourage other
      GPISD students to apply for this opportunity.”


      Hernandez will be attending Dartmouth starting
      this fall and will double major in Economics and
      Government.

          n September 2017, Quentin Washington, North Shore Senior High School student and SkillsUSA District
          8 President, was selected to go to Washington D.C. to participate in the SkillsUSA’s Washington
     ILeadership Training Institute.
                                                                          The five-day Washington Leadership Training Institute is
                                                                          sponsored each year by SkillsUSA to provide students
                                                                          an opportunity to learn about Washington D.C., how
                                                                          to effectively communicate with their legislative
                                                                          representatives, and about personnel, workplace and
                                                                          technical skills grounded in academics.


                                                                          This year, more than 500 students from 29 states
                                                                          discussed the value of public career and technical
                                                                          education to their respective states, the quality of their
                                                                          education and training, their occupational plans and
                                                                          the benefits of their participation in SkillsUSA.


                                                                          During Washington’s trip to D.C., he met with other
                                                                          students who are also in Career and Technical
                                                                          Education. All of the students had an opportunity to
                                                                          speak with Senator Ted Cruz and visit the Tomb of the
                                                                          Unknowns and Pentagon 9-11 Memorial.
